Who Moved the Checkered Flag?

My challenge was me. I was addicted to performance and high achievement. Each success only fueled my need to outdo myself.

Who Moved the Checkered Flag?

For as long as I can remember, my biggest challenge was myself. I was addicted to high achievement—always chasing the next goal, needing to outdo my last success. It was exhilarating but also exhausting. No matter how much I gave to the world, I could never satisfy my drive to become someone I respected. My health, emotions, and relationships all suffered because of it.

For decades, I worked as a leadership educator, facilitator, and coach in over twenty countries. Our mission was to help leaders in developing nations create sustainable solutions. Immersing myself in many different cultures was a privilege—an experience I’ll always cherish. My work touched thousands of lives, and even now, clients I worked with 25 years ago still reach out, sharing how our time together changed their lives.

Sounds amazing, right? In many ways, it was. But I was chasing a moving target; no matter how much I achieved, it was never enough. I was on a fast track to nowhere.

The Truth Will Set You Free, But First…

About 30 years ago, I came across a book that hit me like a ton of bricks. It was called *“The Truth Will Set You Free, But First It Will Make You Miserable”* by Jamie Buckingham. It was hilarious and profound all at once. The stories opened my eyes to a truth I had been avoiding: If I wanted to know myself, I had to face the uncomfortable parts of my life. And that was the problem—I had been dodging that awkward stuff for years.

It wasn’t until my kids grew up and the house fell quiet that I finally asked myself: *Is this how I want to keep living?* I felt trapped by the very commitments I had made. What once brought me fulfillment now felt like tight ropes pulling at my skin, causing pain and boredom. I was stuck.

That’s when I got serious about the limiting beliefs holding me back. People saw me as this upbeat, can-do person, but my inner dialogue told a different story. I realized that my mindset, focused on helping others, had quietly sabotaged my happiness.

But change is possible. I realized I could evolve as I discovered how I was standing in my own way. I could create a new version of myself—Harmony 2.0 and beyond!

My Clients Write Their Own Stories

That’s when I shifted from counseling to coaching. I wanted to help others like I had helped myself—by empowering them to discover their truths and master their mindsets. I’m not a therapist but a coach who uses the same tools that changed my life to help my clients reshape theirs.

I work with women who are achievers—dedicated, dependable, and devoted friends to others. I help them turn that kindness and compassion inward, teaching them how to be forgiving and empowering for themselves.

Together, we’ll identify the limiting beliefs that hold you back, reframe your mindset, and reconnect you with your purpose.

Success and freedom aren’t mutually exclusive. You can redefine success on your terms, creating harmony in every area of your life.

Key People Who Shaped My Life – My Mentors and Coaches

Like you, there is no way I could remember and effectively list all the people who helped shape my life.  Every contact, teacher, friend, lover, enemy, neighbor, co-worker, boss, health provider, and or service provider has and will have a lasting impact on my experience.  This list is more of an honorable bow and loving acknowledgment to the people who have, most of them without ever knowing, made such an impact that I would quote them often or refer to them in my stories.

My Mother, Helen: Mom is a woman of tremendous SUPERPOWERS.  She is fiercely private. I watched her transform from personal tragedy to a fulfilling life she created and is proud of. Mom became a registered nurse at 59 and worked full-time until her 80th birthday (12-hour night shifts). She got her pilot’s license at 60, and when she retired, she moved from one of life’s retirement capitals to a remote mid-western town with harsh weather and young families. Helen bucks all trends! She is, and has been, a friend, advisor, one who challenges me, a great giggle buddy, and the heroine of my life.  Mom taught me I can do anything, not really from her words – but from watching her. (To be honest, I think she can do anything! She set and continues to set a HIGH BAR.)

My Grandmother, Meta: Same. She retired as a part-time licensed nurse at 84. She married in her mid-fifties for the second time after suffering in an abusive marriage for many years. Grandma and my grandpa (he was her second hubby, but my grandpa in spirit) survived the loss of all their belongings in a fire and rebuilt their lives, yet again.  Goodness, she must have been my age or older at the time.  She was always kind to me, interested in my life, and generous. We shared a room when I was eight, and I would wait for her to come home from square dancing. She was so beautiful in her swish-swashy dresses. She taught me to love lavender and wear jewelry. To be brave and stop whining. Grandma was a risk taker, kind, and a listener to the scores of people she sponsored (coached in a 12 12-step program).

These two women have given me vision, determination, and excellent genes!

Dr. Julias Coker (RIP): A Bishop from Nigeria, Dr. Coker became my mentor for several years.  The bishop’s impact on my life cannot be expressed in words. He weighed 100 pounds and maybe reached 5’4″, but his stature in my world is gigantic.

Albert Einstein: Much of how I view life, see problems, admire imagination, and dream in abstraction are influenced by the years I have spent reading and studying Einstein.  Do I understand the physics? Heck no.  But I keep trying. And in the process I know more of how the universe works. He was, and I am sure still is, SUPERPOWERS in action.

Nelson Mandela: My life has not always been easy, and I have had some doozies to forgive. I thought I had reason to feel like a victim until I read Mandela’s masterpiece, Long Walk to Freedom, probably 25 years ago.  That is what it means to know God. That is what it means to know love. He showed how to embody (literally) forgiveness.

Deepak Chopra: While I don’t always understand him, or perhaps agree, I will say that I have read more books and taken more courses from him than any other teacher over the years.  His emphasis on the body and mind connection, spiritual depth through silence, and interest in physics have kept me intrigued most of my adult life.

Steve Chandler: Author and considered the “grandfather of coaching,” Steve Chandler’s prolific writing has helped me immensely in my continued learning to be a better coach. His emphasis on service above self-promotion is unique in my field and magnetized me to his message from the first 20 pages I read. You can’t go wrong reading any of his books—and there are plenty.

Saint Francis of Assisi: Nope. I am not Catholic, but I have studied St. Francis for years. I regard his precious spirit as the reason for my choices to live harmoniously with nature and all living beings. He was a world changer and contributor while living a short, meaning-filled life.

Ginger: My golden retriever. I know some humans love me. I am so grateful for them. But Ginger helped me find a way to receive love like I had never known in my entire life.  Much of my transformation happened during the 13.5 years she was in my physical world.

A woman who worked with my parents when I was 8 or 9: I had pretty hefty responsibilities as a young child. One day, when she was over at our house with my parents for a meeting, she came into the kitchen where I was doing some chores. She said things about me that she had noticed. She told me what she thought I might be in the future and that, without a doubt, I would be good at whatever I did. Little did she know she fed the addiction I had for performance and strategically planted the seeds I needed for my SUPERPOWERS transformation.
