Who Is A Global Citizen?

Who Is A Global Citizen?

What Is Global Citizenship?

Tonight I watched Larry King interview former President Bill Clinton on the upcoming US election, the financial crisis in America and his present commitment to global interconnectedness: "Clinton's Global Initiative."

In light of my recent post: The Triple Win Strategy = Win+Win+Win, I was captivated by a statement Mr. Clinton used describing what he considered to be a true citizen.

There's more to being a citizen than voting. Be sure to VOTE!

He acknowledged that most people would describe a good citizen as a law abiding, tax and bill paying individual. - (go to work and mow the lawn type person [mine]).

Clinton urged Americans to begin to think differently about what it means to be a good citizen.

"For public good as private citizens."

Acknowledging the limitations of governments and their treasuries, Clinton suggested that a citizen asks not only how can I obey the law, but "how can I give back to the community, the nation and the world?"

This is TRIPLE WIN CITIZENSHIP:

  • I benefit with the privileges of belonging to a great country (whatever country you might be a citizen of),
  • the country benefits by me doing what is expected and even legislated by law,
  • and the third vital element: how I give to the world at large? What do I "give back" to this amazing planet that sustains me?

How can you and I become the global citizen that leaves our own legacy in the world?

Recognize that every action we take, every transaction we make, and every word spoken, has consequences; for good or for harm. Each of us can begin to take ownership of our part of the solution
.
What you do with your coffee money on Tuesdays could feed a whole family for a week! IMAGINE you could feed a family every meal for an entire week.

Begin to Consider:

  1. Do I buy locally and avoid the planet costs of long distance transport?
  2. Do I buy products that are made by people who are forced to work for pennies, if that, a day?
  3. Am I willing not to buy what I think I really want, if the cost to the planet is unacceptable?
  4. What ideas can I foster to find solutions for new energy sources that will mobilize the generations to come? (Impacts the car I buy, the light bulbs I use, and the stocks I purchase.)
  5. What can my business do to begin or to continue to contribute to global awareness and opportunity? Am I connected to those who can help me find out?

Triple Win Strategy is the emerging way of life on this planet. Join us in the discussion. Leave your insights, questions or comment below.

Great post Harmony!
We in North America vote every day with our dollars and it makes up a much bigger impact than the vote we take at the ballot box. Its so important to be mindful....Thank you!
